Types of coverage
Workers' Compensation
Workers’ Compensation is an essential safety net for independent contractors, providing financial and medical support when work-related injuries or illnesses occur. This coverage ensures that if a contractor is injured while on the job, they won't have to bear the burden of medical expenses, lost wages, or other financial hardships alone. In unfortunate cases of fatal workplace incidents, it also provides survivor benefits to their dependents.
A common misconception is that Workers' Comp is not accessible to independent contractors, or that they do not need it. In reality, this coverage is designed to protect contractors and absolves monumental risk. Unlike employees who are automatically covered by their employers’ policies, freelancers need to secure this protection independently to safeguard their livelihood.
Key benefits include:
Medical Expense Coverage: Ensures individuals receive necessary treatment without worrying about out-of-pocket costs.
Income Protection: Compensates for lost wages while individuals recover.
Family Support: Provides survivor benefits to dependents in case of a fatal work-related incident.
Workers’ Compensation isn’t just an extra cost—it’s an investment in safety and financial stability. Accidents can happen to anyone, even in seemingly low-risk jobs. Having this coverage gives independent contractors and the enterprises that hire them peace of mind to focus on what they do best, knowing they’re covered if things go wrong.
General Liability
A General Liability policy provides protection against claims for bodily injury, property damage, personal injury, or advertising injury that may arise in the course of business.
Here are a few examples of what General Liability typically covers:
Bodily injury: An influencer causes injury to a third party while promoting a brand. The injured party sues, seeking damages for pain, suffering, and medical expenses.
Property damage: An independent contractor installs faulty equipment and causes damage (e.g. fire) to the client's premises.
Personal injury: Claims for non-physical harm resulting from defamatory or slanderous statements made by a spokesperson when speaking about a competitor's product.
A General Liability policy also protects the enterprise client and their brand by providing an additional insured status, as required of the independent contractor.
Media Liability
Media Liability Insurance protects content creators if someone claims that their content (videos, podcasts, blogs, social posts, or branded work, etc) has caused harm.
Unlike our other types of coverage, Media Liability policies have one month minimum, and cost is calculated by length of assignment rather that wage. Media Liability plans effectuate when the content is published on social media.
This could include claims of copyright infringement, defamation, invasion of privacy, or plagiarism. If someone sues a creator over something they’ve created or published, this coverage helps with legal fees, settlements, or judgments.
Cyber Liability
Cyber Liability protects IT services contractors and their clients by offering coverage for key risks associated with cyber incidents.
It provides protection in case of data breaches, credit monitoring, or cyber attacks (for example) and can help cover legal expenses, public relations expenses, regulatory penalties and protection from claims arising from technology errors and omissions.
